Amanda Mc Cavour
Amanda McCavour uses a sewing machine to create drawings and installations from thread on fabric that dissolves in water (McCavour, n.d.).Utlising line and its 2-d and 3-d implications, stitch is used in her work to explore a multitude of concepts such as the fibers of the body, connections to home, and more formal considerations of thread’s accumulative presence(McCavour, n.d.). Amanda’s work explores embroidery’s duality (McCavour, n.d.).
What interests me about Amanda is not her research but the fragility shown in her work. Her work often gives me a sense of fleeting beauty, like a memory or whisper. The threads she uses create an illusion of weightlessness, a feeling that the work is barely held together. In my own work, I aim to achieve a similar aesthetic. Hence, it is interesting to see how different artists portray delicacy, fragility, etc.

Koh Myeung Keun

Koh uses photography (2-D medium) but transforms it into a three-dimensional piece. Koh's process starts with digitally printing his photos onto film (TOKYO Gallery + BTAP, n.d.). He then laminates with clear plastic and buildst into three-dimensional forms using a heat gun (TOKYO Gallery + BTAP, n.d.). The semi-transparent photographic layers have been designed to appear as if they were the walls of a building, but not as an attempt to recreate the structure of the subject. The result that we see is a paradoxical space, where the interior seems to be the exterior itself(TOKYO Gallery + BTAP, n.d.).
In my work, I use double imagery, overlapping lines, etc. Koh's work presented me with new ways of playing with lines and imagery. I have always wanted to explore the intersection between photography and painting. However, I have always felt photography to be too 'cold-cut'. Koh's is the first photography-based work I felt a strong sense of connection to. In future works, I plan to draw lessons from Koh's translucent structure and incorporate elements into my work. This includes the possibility of exhibiting silk paintings in a similar presentation format to Koh
